SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Firefighters were busy battling a brush fire that was threatening homes in Poway Monday afternoon.
Fire crews were able to stop the forward progress of a 3-acre brush fire in Poway -- dubbed the Ted Williams Fire -- that broke out just after 1 p.m. Monday near a hiking trail by the intersection of Ted Williams Pkwy and Pomerado Road, just behind the Poway Fire Department Station 3.
SkyFOX/KUSI in the SKY was over the fire for about an hour and smoke and flames could be seen threatening nearby homes.
At 2 p.m., the City of Poway and the sheriff's department announced evacuation warnings for residents on Glen Oak Road and Wilsey Way. Pomerado Road was also closed due to the emergency response.
Cal Fire crews assisted at the scene and helicopters were called in to provide air support.
The evacuation warning was lifted at 4:37 p.m., according to Alert San Diego.
A temporary evacuation point was set up at Abraxas High School at 12450 Glen Oak Road in Poway for impacted residents.
The San Diego Sheriff's Office asked the public to avoid the area while emergency crews were busy fighting back those flames.
Crews will remain on the scene for several hours mopping up hot spots and cutting vegetation, so the public is advised to use caution when driving in the area of Ted Williams Pkwy and Pomerado Road, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the City of Poway.
