Local officials react to Trump's inauguration, change expected ahead
Jan 20, 2025
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Donald Trump has officially been sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. Monday's inauguration marks the start of a new political chapter for our country.
22News learned the first steps the Trump administration plans to take in office, and the possible impacts it could have here in our state.
We spoke with Anthony Cignoli, a local political consultant who tells us that Monday's ceremony had a clear message---and that's of change and swift action from this new administration. "All of this is a message, and a message to the world that it's going to be a different way the United States is going to go about playing on the international stage."
Cignoli says that Trump's first few days in office are expected to bring brazen action. As he laid out his agenda during his speech---Trump declared that the U.S. government will only recognize two genders, and said he will sign several executive orders targeting healthcare, trade, and immigration.
When it comes to Massachusetts, Attorney General Campbell is bolstering her office to challenge the Trump administration if need be, and experts tell us state lawmakers also need to be at the ready.
"Those issues are going to be on immigration, gender identity, etc.," says Cignoli. "If our Democratic leadership just focuses on those things only---only those big battles--and perhaps they should---but if they do, they are going to lose track of some of the other bigger issues---economic development, etc., and that could put Massachusetts in a tough situation."
As for the congressional midterm elections in 2026, Cignoli says its outcome will greatly depend on how President Trump delivers on his promises. We are also hearing from the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Colation tonight in response to Trump's executive order, they tell us they are calling on Beacon Hill to pass policies including the Safe Communities Act, to protect immigrants and---quote---"prevent state and local law enforcement from doing the work of ICE agents."
