COVENTRY, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed a Border Patrol agent out of the Swanton Sector was shot and killed in the line of duty. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is currently investigating the shooting. The Vermont State Police are assisting federal authorities. They said it happened around 3:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 91. The FBI is leading the investigation. "On January 20, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the US Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector was fatally shot in the line of duty. The incident is currently being investigated and CBP will release additional information as it becomes available." U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Officials with the FBI said there were two suspects in the vehicle. One of those suspects is said to be dead. The FBI said in a statement the other suspect is injured and in custody. The interstate was closed in both directions as law enforcement investigated the shooting. The northbound side of the highway has since reopened. I-91 southbound remains closed. Drivers should seek alternate routes.
