ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man is facing a murder charge after deputies say he shot and killed a suspected heavy equipment thief. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said Miguel Varela and his brother were searching for the excavator after it was stolen Sunday morning. They found it in the South Valley near Second and Prosperity Ave., and Varela told deputies that he drove toward the truck hauling the excavator to get it to stop. Albuquerque Police Department investigates hit-and-run that killed bicyclist Varela claimed he saw the driver reach for something prompting Varela to open fire. The driver, Isidro Ramirez, was killed. Varela was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center overnight for second-degree murder.
