NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico lawmakers say they are ready to put up a fight after President Donald Trump signed several executive orders aimed at immigration. Trump is back in office following his inauguration on Monday. "The Golden Age of America begins right now,” said Donald J. Trump, 47th President of the United States. And he's diving right in, "Today, I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense. It's all about common sense,” said Trump. In one of the executive orders signed on Monday, Trump declared a national emergency at the country's southern border. "All illegal entry will be immediately halted, and we will be returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” said Trump. Other executive orders Trump signed include declaring cartels as foreign terrorists and an order to end birthright citizenship. But New Mexico lawmakers are prepared to put up a fight. "What I want all New Mexicans to know is that our five-member delegation is planning to push back, fight back, do everything we can to protect the constitutional and legal rights of New Mexicans, and I know that our governor and our state legislature right here in the Roundhouse are prepared to do the same,” said Rep. Melanie Stansbury, New Mexico. Rep. Melanie Stansbury said this executive order is about scaring people, "I know that many many New Mexicans out there are extremely frightened especially families of mixed status who are concerned that they themselves or members of their families may be deported or impacted by these executive orders.” The Trump Administration said it also wants to end the practice of catch and release, reinstate the "Remain in Mexico" policy, and send federal troops to border states. But Stansbury believes some of these orders won't get past the courts, "Upon the filing of these executive orders and any actions that they might take pursuant to them. We're going to see immediate challenges in the courts to these.” She explained that, for example, ending birthright citizenship would violate the country's constitution. Other state leaders are also reacting, including Attorney General, Raúl Torrez. Who said in a statement: "Today, we celebrate a return to the basic idea of respecting the results of free and fair election and a shared commitment to the peaceful transfer of power. While we respect President Trump's right to articulate the domestic priorities of his second administration, it is important that we also reassure New Mexicans of our commitment to uphold the rule of law without fear or favor. As always, we will work with our state and federal law enforcement partners to improve public safety in every community in our state, but we will not hesitate to resist any enforcement action that violates the law or the Constitution. At the New Mexico Department of Justice, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the rights of every resident and believe it is part of our core mission to ensure that no individual or community faces violations of their fundamental freedoms. By fostering collaboration, transparency, and accountability, we aim to build a future where everyone can thrive. As we look ahead, we reaffirm our dedication to serving the people of New Mexico with integrity and strength. Together, we can achieve meaningful progress and create a brighter tomorrow." Raúl Torrez, Attorney General of New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Luján also weighed in; after attending the inauguration, he shared in a statement: "Today, I attended the inauguration for the new administration as I have done for each president since being elected to Congress. The peaceful transition of power is a sacred cornerstone of our democracy, and I remain committed to upholding it. As the new administration takes office, my work for New Mexico remains the same, and I will hold the administration accountable when I see injustice. These next four years will undoubtedly present challenges for the American people, but new Mexicans can rest assured that I'll always be a strong voice for our state."
