RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A man remains on the run after shooting a park ranger in Richmond's Belle Isle area Sunday afternoon. That ranger survived with only minor injuries, essentially bruising, but the search for the shooter continues. 8News spoke with Alexandra Murphy near the site on Monday. She had taken her loved ones — and puppy — on an uncharacteristically desolate Belle Isle stroll. "Yeah, it looks a little dead right now," Murphy responded when asked to compare the Belle Isle area on Monday to what the spot typically looks like. The deserted space could be the result of Monday's below freezing temperatures or it could represent the lingering fear after Sunday's 2 p.m. shooting. 8News was at the site Sunday evening to hear from Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards. He said it all started as an urban park ranger was out in the park system doing his job. "He was interacting with an individual in a wooded area in the park offering him services for shelter when suddenly the male produced a firearm and shot him in the chest," Chief Edwards said. The shooter then took off running. Murphy told 8News that she was shocked to hear this happened in such a popular part of the River City. "I was just telling [family members] how beautiful and fun it is in the summer," Murphy commented. "And so, it's kind of it's... it's sad to hear that this is happening." However, as a visitor from Washington, D.C., she said it's becoming all too common. "Oh, I hear about this all the time," Murphy reflected. "I feel like there's a shooting every day." The victim was wearing a bullet proof vest and survived with minor bruising, but the manhunt continues. Police describe the suspect as a 5 foot 11, Black man in his late 30's with unkempt hair, a patchy beard, a black winter coat and dirty clothes. "It's just sad," Murphy said. "It's really disappointing, especially here. I love Richmond and people should know that this is a beautiful, safe, city -- not a dangerous one." It's important to know, police have not found the weapon, so — at this point — it's assumed the man is still armed and dangerous. Police had previously asked members of the public to avoid the Belle Isle area, but a Richmond Police Department representative told 8News Tuesday evening that there are no longer restrictions in place. If anyone sees someone matching that description, they are asked to call 911, immediately.
