NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) - The Outer Banks could possibly get some snow Tuesday night, and locals and visitors alike are preparing for it. One to two inches of snow is being forecasted for the area. That included Sherry Perkins, who drove from Raleigh to Nags Head with hopes to experience the rare sight.  "I'm chasing the snow,” Perkins said. “I love the snow, and I love the beach. So, two of my favorite things at one time is great.”  For one local man, it was time to get ready for the potentially unusual event.  "We came to buy some stuff, try to prepare for the weather, in case [we get] a little snow," said Outer Banks resident Oscar Torres.   Torres said he has lived in the area for three-and-a-half years, but he’s never seen it snow before. "[We’ll] try to do what most people would do, try to stay inside, warm and put some salt on the decks to not fall or have any accidents," Torres said.   Meteorologist Don Slater said the last time it snowed on the Outer Banks was in 2018.   "It doesn't happen very often,” Slater said.   He said it should begin around 6 p.m. Tuesday night for Hatteras Island, and that the consistency will be wet and perfect for making snowballs.   "The Outer Banks are going to be closest to the storm, and the fact that you're closest to the storm, and it's still going to be well below freezing,” Slater said. “Even though you've got water on either side that's obviously above freezing, you're going to end up with air that's cold enough. It's where all of this water vapor comes in off the ocean, it's going to be in the form of snow.”  Perkins added that she’ll be hunkered down and ready for the possibility of the rare experience.   "I have an oceanfront room," Perkins said, "and so, just being able to walk outside the sliding door and into the snow would just be great."
