JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — More than a dozen fire chiefs gathered at the Kenner Fire Department to discuss home heating safety ahead of Tuesday's winter weather.
The fire officials in attendance said residents should not use their fireplaces unless they've recently been inspected by a professional.

They also shared concerns about space heaters.
"As we like to say, space heaters need space. Make sure you keep at least three feet away from anything near space heaters that could be combustible. Do not leave them unattended. Do not leave children unattended in the vicinity of space heaters," said New Orleans Fire Department Superintendent Roman Nelson.
Fire officials also emphasized the importance of staying home and staying off the roads, as well as not using a stove or oven to heat your home.
