On the 40th anniversary of central Indiana's all-time coldest wind chill, we had the coldest wind chills in more than a year. Several spots had wind chills well below zero as low as -22° this morning in Kokomo. This arctic blast is affecting most of the United States early this week. Cold weather headlines extend from both borders from north to south. Additionally, a historic snow event is about to unfold in parts of the Deep South where Winter Storm Warnings are posted. Needless to say, it's busy. We have at least another day and a half with subzero wind chills and temperatures struggling to hit double digits above zero. As more folks head back to work and school following the holiday, it will be a tough go-around because of the cold. Multiple school districts are closed or have delays. You can check out the list here. The coldest periods will be Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Expect wind chills between -10° and -15° in spots. A few flurries may fly during those timeframes, too. Forecast highs on Tuesday are in the single digits. The record "cold high" for Tuesday is 5° which was set in 1970. The polar vortex air will retreat back up into Canada. Our jet stream will flatten and allow temperatures to moderate a bit. We'll approach freezing Thursday and Friday with a few scattered snow showers possible. By the weekend, highs could make a run at 40° Saturday with rain chances also in the picture. Beyond this week to open February, moderating temperatures look to stick around with a trend of slightly above-normal temperatures also in the picture.
