Sheridan police’s stray bullet hit nearby home
SHERIDAN, Ind. (WISH) — A Sheridan police officer responded to a report of shots fired Sunday, but police say those shots may have come from the officer’s own gun.
Sheridan Assistant Chief of Police Coy Monroe said, “We were just lucky it didn’t have any power behind it when it got there and no one was injured.”
The on-duty volunteer officer went on break and test-fired nongovernment-issued guns at a private gun range with a friend. Police say one of the bullets traveled three-quarters-of-a-mile and hit one of homes at Maple Run subdivision. The officer immediately called his supervisor, Monroe.
The backstop at the firing range didn’t stop the stray bullet, Monroe said. “The ground is frozen right now and no matter what you do, even with the back stop, if something ricochets off of something, it’s going to travel a distance.”
Monroe claims, from where they were firing, the houses at the Maple Run Subdivision are not visible in the distance.
The shooting range, he says, was also built prior to the homes at the subdivision.
“When you live in this type of community that grows as fast as they are, just take a look at the situation.”
Monroe warned residents to evaluate their locations before firing a weapon as new homes are built close by.
The Sheridan Police Department has asked the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.
The sheriff’s office declined comment on Monday.
As for the officer, Monroe said, “He was a little upset that this occurred. I mean you have to understand our objective is to protect our community.”
