HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) -- Water rescues, especially ones with tragic outcomes, are not just tough on the families who lost a loved one but the first responders who have been called in to help as well. This winter, High Point Fire Department Captain Hunter Hayworth says the HPFD Dive Team has been busy responding to water rescues in extreme cold temperatures. "Our call volume this winter has been a little higher than normal. I'm assuming it's because of the cold weather. I'm thinking that more people are seeing the ice and thinking they can walk on it, which is just not the case," Hayworth said. Hayworth says the most recent water rescue his team assisted with was in Winston-Salem. On Thursday, they responded to the 4000 block of Duck Pond Court after three children fell in a frozen pond. Unfortunately, one of the children died. Minor dies after Winston-Salem water rescue on Duck Pond Court "We ended up finding the young girl with our remote ... vehicle," Hayworth said. It's a machine that uses sonar lights and cameras to find victims. On Jan. 13, Hayworth's team assisted Guilford County officials with retrieving the body and vehicle of 26-year-old Laequan Little from a pond at an apartment complex in Greensboro. FOX8 asked Hayworth how his team is bearing the mental and physical load. It's a very tragic situation, and my heart goes out to their family, but we have to maintain our readiness and continue to do our job for everybody here," Hayworth said. He says High Point does have a good employee assistant program for first responders who need help, but their team is also there for each other. "We all experience it ... We all have, depending on how many years you've been here. We just rely on each other to talk, decompress, be a shoulder for each other ... It's just a real brotherhood here," Hayworth said. Hayworth says if someone falls into a frozen body of water, they have about 15 minutes to get out. If an individual stays in water any longer than that, they could go into shock.
