THOMASVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) -- Thomasville city leaders have an urgent message for residents to conserve water. The water supply is low after a number of water main breaks because of the cold weather. On Sunday afternoon, people in Thomasville got a notification from city leaders asking people to conserve water. “The system is a looped system, and everyone is connected to everything. The water that is in the water hydrant is the same water that is used for potable drinking water,” Thomasville City Manager Michael Brandt said. This means using it could cause an issue down the line for hospitals. “We know that they need water to perform their critical emergency needs … If and when there was a fire in the community and we had to hook up to it then that’s going to put a strain on the water system in addition to the lack of water that we have right now,” Brandt said. People may notice a slight change in water pressure, but city officials say the water quality isn’t the concern. The amount of water left in the reserves is what poses a threat. “Generally speaking, there’s water in the system. We’re producing water at 100% capacity, but the way that the water systems work is ... there’s more usage during the day, and then that takes the reserves down ... At night, we recharge and build up the water for the next day,” Brandt said. The city has lost so much water that they haven’t been able to recharge. As the temperatures drop, the ground retracts, putting too much pressure on the pipe system. Brandt worries that since this cold snap is hanging around, it will continue to put them in an even greater deficit.   “Then when it gets above freezing, the ground shifts again as it starts to unfreeze, and that’s going to probably cause some additional breaks in the next week or so,” Brandt said. Brandt says if everyone cuts back on using their water, they believe this can be solved in a few days. If people find leaks, please report them to the water plant by calling (336) 475-4247.
