BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A group in the Metro Baton Rouge Area is helping teens conquer tough conversations and situations. The Face to Face Enrichment Center presents "Cookies and Convos." It's an initiative designed to teach teenagers between ages 14 and 19 the importance of healthy relationships using the Love Notes Curriculum. "We go out into schools and other programs to partner with their kids. We also invite kids to come to our facility as well... it's a good time to connect with peers and also open up and have that safe space that they might not feel like in a regular classroom at school, said Jazmine Johnson, Cookies and Convo Facilitator. Each session consists of 13 one-hour lessons on topics varying from decision-making, communication, abstaining from sexual intercourse, and overall safety. The class is taught through group discussions, exercises, and videos. "The Love Note Curriculum that we implement, we start off by teaching about knowing yourself and then we go in with healthy decision making," said Tiara Conner. Students who complete at least 75% of the course, are given a $50 gift card, T-shirt, and certificate once they complete the multi-week course. When asked where the name "Cookies and Convo" started, CEO and Founder of the Face to Face Enrichment Center, Gabrielle Johnson said she wanted something that resonates. She said most kids like cookies and the name is catchy. "Throughout the whole program, we provide snacks. Like if we go to the schools, we have a chance to open up and give gifts or something if they participate," said Brianna Glover. To help improve relationships between kids and adults at home, parents have an opportunity to take classes too. There's a monthly parent-only session. Group facilitators said the goal is to improve parent's knowledge and skills which will open the door for helpful conversations. Especially, when it comes to healthy sexual behavior to prevent teenage pregnancy and STIs. There are several different locations in Louisiana and Texas: Baton Rouge, Hammond, Metairie, Houston, and Dallas. Sessions are typically twice a week.
