BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Many people no doubt watched Donald Trump’s inauguration from the comfort of their own homes Monday morning, but for patrons of McGarry’s Irish Pub, it was a special occasion. Dozens of people came out around 9 a.m. to watch the historic swearing-in ceremony. McGarry’s opens at 11 a.m., normally, but this was not a normal day – not for this west Bakersfield business and not for America.  For only the second time in U.S. history, a defeated president has returned to the White House victorious. For supporters of America’s 45th and 47th president, this was a day not so much about politics or policy, but about celebration. Like a Super Bowl victory parade, without the confetti or 300 pound linemen. Chris Metas borrowed his son’s giant, foam MAGA ballcap just to make it abundantly clear where he stands.  “Better to celebrate with as many as possible,” he said. “I mean, at home I probably would’ve still been in my jammies, still at home. Here, I'm out with friends, people I love, and beer, and I get to get dressed up and wear my hat.” About 135 Trump supporters were on hand at the Doubletree Hotel for a somewhat more official watch party.  Houchin Blood Bank hosting ‘LA Fire Youth Donation Drive’ until end of January Meanwhile, across town, the enthusiasm was a bit more muted. The Rev. Wesley Crawford, attending the MLK Day breakfast, said he was hoping for words of unity from the new, old president. No such luck, he said. “Not too thrilled,” he said. “That’s basically because you’re trying to unite the country. It’s not about Democratic vs Republican.” So, some celebrated, some did not. Some toasted the returning king with Bloody Marys and doughnuts. Some toasted another King – Dr. Martin Luther King - with hope, perhaps a little dread and almost as many prayers as accompanied Trump’s inauguration.
