Residents of a few Poway streets had been ordered to evacuate and others were warned they might need to leave as crews battled a brush fire early Monday afternoon — although those warnings were later paused as crews stopped the fire’s spread. The fire was reported at Ted Williams Parkway at Pomerado Road, according to a sheriff’s watch commander. People were evacuating in the area of Wilsey Way and Glen Oak Way, the city posted on X. The city also said traffic on both Ted Williams and Pomerado was impacted and to expect road closures. The first reports started coming in just before 1:20 p.m. The blaze quickly grew to 3 acres, a sheriff’s official said. The evacuation warnings were paused around 3 p.m., the sheriff’s official said. Cal Fire assisted in the fight, sending two helicopters, an air attack plane and two air tankers to the scene. The air resources were later released from the firefight. The National Weather Service says the winds near the Poway fire are blowing up to 20 mph out of the east-northeast and the relative humidity has fallen to 14%. Weather conditions in that area are rapidly getting worse, forecasters said. The region was under a red-flag fire warning for areas east of Interstate 15 as moderate to strong Santa Ana winds will develop Monday afternoon and continue through Tuesday evening. Staff writer Gary Robbins contributed to this report.
