HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) -- On Monday's cold start to the week, volunteers in Hagerstown were out at dawn serving breakfast to many who may have otherwise gone without a meal. Horizon Goodwill, a non-profit, dedicated Martin Luther King Day to caring for others as a way to live up to the ideals of the iconic champion for civil rights, equality and helping the less fortunate. Volunteers braved the frigid temperatures before sunrise to help staff at their warehouse on the west side of town serve hot coffee and a morning meal. For Christina, volunteering on Jan. 20 was a no-brainer. What’s open, closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Inauguration Day? "I had an email that said they were looking for some volunteers today," Christina said. "And you know what? I didn't have anything going on so why not? If they're going to show up because they're hungry then I can at least help show up and serve." Like Christina, Hagerstown native Debra Smith said there was no hesitation in being of service to the community. "Everybody appreciates that we're here and they're looking forward to it. I'm blessed to be here just because I've lived here all my life. So this is what I'm gonna do," she said. Rhianna, another volunteer, said it is rewarding to give back. "I'm off work today," Rhianna said. "And my wife actually works here and I'm trying to help her out. It always feels nice to give to your community and help people out that, you know, need a little hand up."
