ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A mechanical failure on a ski lift led to a snow rescue evacuation at Bristol Mountain Saturday.
"Five minutes passed... still stuck. Ten minutes passed...still stuck," said Sam Zukoski, who was stuck with a friend on the lift.
Saturday evening, it started off like a fairly normal ski trip for Zukoski and his friend on Bristol Mountain. He was going up the lift around 6:30 p.m. for another run down when the lift stopped. That's normal enough, but he and his friend grew quite concerned. The two even contemplated jumping off the lift since they weren't high off the ground, but the lift lurched forward again and again.
Eventually:
"Probably around 7:30 is when they started to use the ropes to get people off," Zukoski said.
Crews could be seen on video using ropes to get the people who were stuck out of the Ski lift.
During that time, the lift had developed a failure.
"They ran into another problem with the auxiliary, which caused them to basically say, 'hey, we need to evacuate this lift,'" said Tim Eygabroad, the lift evac operator.
An automated message went out to all ski patrollers. Eygaboard said they sprang into action, alongside mountain staff for support. Rescuers used a rope like a bat-grapple. Once that rope was secure, they fed another one up with a T-bar for people to mount.
Everyone was rescued from the lifts using the ropes. No injuries were reported, and auxiliary power was eventually restored. Eygabroad said Bristol does go through maintenance on the lifts, and they train twice a year.
"A lot of practice pays off, so when you do get an event like this.... everyone knows what to do," he said.
Eygabroad called it a job well done.
"I can't wait to go again," admitted Zukoski, despite the mess he wound up in. "I mean, the only bad part of the night was the lift was broken, and I couldn't go skiing more."
He also told News 8 that it was great "dad-lore" he's excited to tell his kids about someday.
