ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — This week is expected to get colder — and students are heading back to school on Tuesday. Although some students take the bus, there are many students who need to walk to school during the winter season. Depending on the wind chill, some could get injured if they are outside for too long. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), they issue advisories when the wind chill falls between -15° to -24°F. Warnings are issued when it falls below -25°F. Neither the NWS nor the New York State Department of Education issues guidance on school closings. Warm up wisely: Safety advice for space heater users So how cold does it need to be for schools to close? The Monroe County Department of Health says there is no easy answer. It explains frostbite can occur in about half an hour at a wind chill temperature of -25°F, but wind chill temperatures can be different in multiple areas. The Department of Health recommends schools to consider -25°F as a consideration to close schools. Many schools such as Spencerport and Penfield also consider road conditions and visibility, but the final decision on whether to close or not is made between 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. Although there are many determining factors, multiple school districts say it is the parent's/guardian's responsibility to decide if it is safe to send their children to school during inclement weather. School districts will send closing announcements to local news stations such as News 8 WROC. You can find our page on school closings by clicking here.
