Biden issues Jan. 6 pardons during last hours in office

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WWLP)--Just hours before now-President Donald Trump was sworn into office, outgoing President Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons for several government officials who could be considered Trump’s enemies.
Throughout Trump’s third presidential campaign, he promised retribution for those involved in investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol. This riot, which Trump encouraged after losing the 2020 presidential election, resulted in several deaths, both of rioters and first responders.

The members of the committee in charge of investigating Trump’s culpability are included in Biden’s blanket pardon, including Liz Cheney, who Trump has said should be sent to jail. Capitol police officers and D.C. Metropolitan police officers who testified before the committee were pardoned as well.
Retired General Mark Milley was preemptively pardoned. The United States withdrew from Afghanistan under his leadership as chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2021.
“After forty-three years of faithful service in uniform to our Nation, protecting and defending the Constitution, I do not wish to spend whatever remaining time the Lord grants me fighting those who unjustly might seek retribution for perceived slights,” said Milley in a statement.
Biden also pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, who led the country’s Covid-19 response, which Trump has heavily criticized. Fauci told reporters that he has not committed any crimes, but this pardon serves as peace of mind for his family.
Political opinion on Biden’s blanket pardons is mixed. One member of the January 6th committee, Senator Adam Schiff, says this move sets a dangerous precedent.
Biden says despite longevity concerns, this move comes out of unique circumstances and necessity, and he could not “in good conscience do nothing.”
Trump told NBC News in a text that Biden’s pardons are “disgraceful” and that many of the individuals who received pardons have committed “MAJOR CRIMES.”
These pardons come just over a month after Biden’s controversial pardon of his son, Hunter, who faced drug and firearm charges. Biden also preemptively pardoned several members of his family in his last minutes in office.
