NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Hundreds gathered Monday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the historic Attucks Theatre in Norfolk. "It's a reminder from Dr. King and Dr. King's legacy that the arc of history bends toward justice, but that we all must work towards justice," said Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney Ramin Fatehi. That's exactly what the cold crowd did Monday morning. Among them was Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander. "It's a great feeling," he told 10 On Your Side. "It's a day of service. Dr. King stressed leadership, but more importantly, he stressed servant leadership and responsibility. It's about what you do for others." Alexander wasn't alone in that sentiment. Although city leaders led the march, it was the community behind them who chanted and cheered every step of the way. Ranging in age, race and background, people gathered to echo Dr. King's message. "It feels bittersweet," said Kamryn Gallop, president of the Norfolk Youth Council. "Although we lost a great leader, we want to be sure we're continuing his legacy while bringing up more people to fulfill his legacy — and keep doing the things he wanted us to do." She and some other teens with the Norfolk Youth Council were an example to those even younger than them. Not far from their shadows were three young kids also celebrating Dr. King. "What would I would do if he was right there," said a young boy bundled up in his coat. "I would give him a hug. I love hugs." "My great-grandma at my mom's side, she was there with Martin Luther King when she was a child and she's still alive," said another young girl in the trio. "It was amazing." As the walk came to a close at the MLK monument in downtown Norfolk, people stood together at its base and prayed. Many said it was a reminder that it's not buildings that build us up, but each other — marching hand-in-hand for a brighter, better tomorrow. "Cities aren't buildings, cities aren't roads," Fatehi said. "Cities are people. And to be out here with our neighbors, to lock arms and to walk and to remind each other of our common humanity, that's how we understand each other. That's how we love each other, and that's how we work together."
