12 cats rescued from house fire in New Orleans East

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Crews with the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a house fire in New Orleans East on Monday, Jan. 20.
The NOFD reported that crews were dispatched to the 7800 block of Brevard Avenue around 9:20 a.m., where they found a home with heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof near the chimney.

At the scene, two residents told firefighters they made it out of the home safely, but their pet cats were still inside.
NOFD officials said seven fire units carrying 21 firefighters were used to extinguish the blaze.

Crews said about 12 cats were rescued from the home, and no injuries were reported.
According to the NOFD, the fireplace was the source of the fire, as "portions of the chimney chute collapsed into the home" after the residents lit the fireplace.
