Vermont State Police cruiserUpdated at 6:06 p.m.Authorities are investigating a shooting Monday afternoon involving the U.S. Border Patrol in northern Vermont, according to Vermont State Police. Adam Silverman, a state police spokesperson, said in a press release late Monday afternoon that his agency was “providing law enforcement assistance” following a shooting “involving” a border patrol agent on Interstate 91 in Coventry. It was not clear from the press release whether it was a border patrol agent or somebody else who had been shot, nor the extent of any injuries.State police, according to Silverman, were “coordinating with federal counterparts following the 3:15 p.m. incident.” Federal authorities, including the FBI, were leading the investigation, Silverman said, referring questions to that agency.Interstate 91 was at one point closed in both directions between Exit 27 in Newport and Exit 26 in Orleans, according to Silverman. The northbound lanes were reported back open near mile marker 168 later Monday afternoon, according to a state traffic alert, while “a long-duration closure” was expected in the southbound lanes. At around 5:45 p.m., more than a dozen police cars with flashing lights could be seen pulled over at a southbound rest area in the Coventry area. North of that location, the southbound onramp at Exit 27 was blocked off by police cars. The incident came during a time of heightened tension along the northern border. Prior to his second inauguration Monday, President Donald Trump had raised concerns about the flow of migrants and drugs from Canada into the U.S., prompting the Canadian and Quebec governments to devote more law enforcement resources to the border. Kristen Fountain contributed reporting.Read the story on VTDigger here: Police respond to shooting involving border patrol agent in northern Vermont.
