Injured deer at Indiana petting zoo dies after another deer, 2 chickens died

FRANKFORT, Ind. (WISH) — A deer found injured last week at a central Indiana petting zoo has died.
Previously, zookeepers at the Frankfort Parks Department’s TPA Park Aviary & Petting Zoo reported a deer and two chickens had died in a barn, and another “distressed deer” was found Thursday during routine checks of the animals.
The distressed deer named Heron had been taken to Purdue University Veterinary Hospital in West Lafayette for treatment.
Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets, in a statement Monday, said she’d been in close contact with the Purdue veterinary team. “This is heartbreaking news. We were all hopeful for a positive outcome for Heron. I can’t thank the Purdue vets enough.”
Purdue is performing necropsies on the deer and the chickens.
Frankfort last week announced its Police Department was reviewing surveillance footage of the animals for clues to their deaths.
The Frankfort zoo is typically open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Thursday’s announcement came during the same week that the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited the zoo with multiple violations after over half of their birds died of unknown causes.
The Republican mayor said in the Monday statements that she and the rest of the Board of Works will be meeting to discuss the future of the Frankfort Parks Department, “including potential measures to enhance wildlife safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.”
The Board of Works typically has public meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers in the basement of Old Stoney, 301 E. Clinton St.
