(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The nephew of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is in Colorado Springs for a series of panels and discussions on justice, democracy, and freedom in today's social and political climate. Isaac Newton Farris Jr., nephew of MLK Jr., will be appearing at three educational panels on Monday (MLK Day), Tuesday, and Wednesday, Jan. 20-22, to kick off the spring semester. The panel series is presented in collaboration with the Pikes Peak Diversity Council, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Preservation Society, and Pikes Peak State College's (PPSC) Black Student Union. Organizers said the series of events are titled "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365," and underscore the importance of collaboration, respect, and resilience in addressing contemporary challenges. Farris Jr. attended his uncle's alma mater at Morehouse College, where he majored in political science. Organizers of the panel series said his upbringing in one of America's most socially and politically active families has provided him with a "front row seat," witnessing how policy is formulated and implemented. "Isaac Newton Farris Jr.'s visit to Pikes Peak State is a valuable opportunity for our students to learn from Dr. Martin Luther King's nephew on the importance of social action," said Ty'Anna Jones Boyd, who is the current president of the Black Student Union at PPSC. "This panel discussion will promote diversity, equitable change, and nonviolent activism in a challenging political landscape. We hope this event will encourage our student body to take a stand for community justice, inclusion and advocacy for underserved populations right here in Colorado Springs.” The panel series is free and open to the public, and all will feature Farris Jr. Monday, Jan. 20: Youth panel discussion will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Louisa Performing Arts Center of the Colorado Springs School, 21 Broadmoor Avenue. Tuesday, Jan. 21: College panel discussion will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Centennial Theater at the PPSC Centennial Campus, 5675 S Academy Blvd. The panel will explore nonviolence as a framework for addressing the critical issues of freedom, justice, and democracy. Organizers said the discussion will aim to honor Dr. King’s enduring legacy while empowering attendees to engage in service, advocacy, and action throughout the year. Wednesday, Jan. 22: Community panel discussion will be held from 3:00-5:30 p.m. at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) in the Roaring Fork Hall within Kettle Creek Event Venue, 4785 Stanton Rd. “This event is an opportunity to strengthen our community by reflecting on Rev. Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence, equality, and inclusion,” said Dr. Enrique Romo, Vice President of Student Experience and Equity at PPSC. “We hope to inspire attendees to recommit themselves to these values and work toward a more just and inclusive society.”
