Stanley tells residents to boil water due to water system pressure problems
Jan 20, 2025
STANLEY, ND (KXNET) — The city of Stanley is warning residents to boil their water before using it from faucets and taps.
The alert, issued Monday afternoon, states in no uncertain terms, "disease-causing organisms may have entered the city of Stanley water supply."
According to the boil order, the city officials, "recently learned about potential health risks to the city of Stanley water supply caused by loss of pressure to the distribution system and this precautionary boil water warning is being issued. The seriousness of this situation warrants this public notice."
The city advises the following precautions:
Don't drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be in the water. Only bottled water should be used for preparing infant formula. Boiled water, bottled water or water from another approved source should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
Due to loss of pressure to the drinking water distribution system, the potential exists for contamination of the drinking water with disease-causing microorganisms which can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. If you experience one or more of these symptoms and they persist, contact your doctor. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care provider. However, the symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. Other illnesses may cause similar symptoms.
City officials say once water pressure is restored, the city will flush the system and collect samples to test for disease-causing organisms to determine if the water is safe to drink.
Until then, they ask residents to boil their water until they tell everyone the water is safe once more.
The city also asks people "share this information with all other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail."
