BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — With extreme cold on the way, protecting your home becomes a big priority. Third-generation plumber Zack Payne said over the years, he's learned what works and what doesn't when it comes to keeping your pipes intact during a hard freeze."If you have any exposed piping on the exterior walls, that’s what’s going to be the first to pop," said Payne. "It’s not so much everything on the inside of your house, as it is the water going into your house, or maybe any external plumbing fixtures that might be mounted on the outside of your house.”He said by simply running a thin, spaghetti-sized stream of water from each faucet in your home, you're likely to avoid problems. "I’m reminding everybody, drip your faucets," he said. "It’s so easy to just get through with your day and then go to sleep. Guys, remember, you have to drip your faucets. You want to run drip on any of your faucets in your house, in multiple areas, hot and cold. Any water lines that are on the exterior of a home, in a cabinet, you want to open those cabinets up, let the heat get in those cabinets, and insulate as much as you can, so wrap your pipes, we have pipe insulation here at Central Plumbing you can buy. If you don't have any, and you can’t get out, you can use a towel or a rag and just wrap up those hose bibs as good as possible."  Even though tips for preventing a pipe-bursting emergency will be posted, Payne said he expects to get calls for help."Typically what we'll see is not so much the first day, but the second and third day, if you’ve got people with pure homes, and they have a lot of exposed pipes, you’ll get a lot of freeze breaks," said Payne. "That gets kind of complicated for us plumbers, because we have to get out there in the cold, and people need their water on.”Payne also said if your pipes burst, stay calm and follow some important next steps."If you do get a freeze break, just shut the water off to your house and let us know," Payne mentioned.
