The family of a mechanic gunned down outside his Queens home had urged him to leave New York like they had, the victim’s sister told the Daily News Monday. Sherman Walker, 51, was shot in the neck, abdomen and left leg outside his basement apartment near Murdock Ave. and 204th St. in St. Albans about 6 p.m. Saturday, cops said. “We moved out of New York, but he stayed back — even though we tried to ask him to get out of there,” the victim’s sister Tamara Walker said. “I just wish sometimes he did listen because then maybe he would be alive.” Police have made no arrests in the case, and an NYPD spokesman had no info on motive Monday. “We’re trying to figure it out,” his 45-year-old sister said. “Because even though my brother has a heart of gold, he also stood up for himself. … He’s the type, if you started something, he’s gonna let you know I’m not standing for it.” His shooting came after the city saw a 5% drop in major crime in 2024, and about 3% fewer homicides than the prior year. The Walker family grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, and came to New York several years ago. Walker’s relatives eventually settled in other states, leaving only him in New York. “He went to school to become a mechanic,” Tamara Walker, 45, said. “He had his mechanic’s degree. He works on cars. So we told him, ‘Move out of New York and see if you can better your career.'” “New York was getting a little rough,” she added. “Things was changing, a lot of crime.” Brother and sister remained close despite living hundreds of miles apart. “We were still connected,” said Tamara . “He’s not a nobody. He has a family, mom and dad, sisters and brothers. And my brother was very loving.” “He had a tough skin,” she added. “Like, if you approach me, he’s not gonna run. He will fight if he has to. But he also learned to walk away.” Theodore Parisienne / New York Daily NewsA pool of blood in the street after Sherman Walker was gunned down near Murdock Ave. in Queens on Sunday. (Theodore Parisienne / New York Daily News) He was recently injured in a car crash but was doing freelance mechanic work to make ends meet while saving up to buy a van and start his own mobile mechanic business, his sister said. “He had things in the works because he’s very inspired,” his sister said. “He’s an inspiration, inspirational person. That was his plan. Then that was all shattered and gone. He didn’t deserve that.” Walker was daring as a child, climbing whatever he could, and grew up to be a protector and a jokester, his sister said. “No one is perfect. We all have our ups and downs, but growing up, my brother was always looking out for us, especially me,” she said. “Being the youngest, he was always the protector over me. … Always asking me if I’m OK. You know, sometimes it’s a little overbearing, but yeah, that’s him.” Though police sources said he has a solitary arrest for a menacing incident in 2019, Walker stayed out of trouble and leaves behind a 14-year-old son, his sister said. The boy lives with his mother out of state. “His son looks just like him. I spoke to him yesterday. He kept saying he wants to go to New York and find out who did this to his dad. He wants his dad back,” she said. “He’s devastated because he can’t believe his dad is gone. They have a great relationship. He was always encouraging his child.” Walker was also close to his mother, who’s taking his death hard, the sister said. “She’s just crying,” Tamara said. “We’re all just being around her, just watching over her, giving her her blood pressure medicines to help to keep her calm and to make sure her health is OK. Tamara Walker said she hopes a witness to the shooting comes forward “because my brother needs justice.” “Whoever did this, they have no conscience,” she said. “Obviously they have no heart. They took away a brother, a father, a son, an uncle, a friend.” Because of the number of times he was shot, she believes her brother was the killer’s intended target. “That was personal,” she said. “That wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I got caught in crossfire.’ That was definitely personal.” With Rebecca White and Elizabeth Keogh
