Missing 6yearold girl dies after falling through icy pond in Massachusetts

NORTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Police in Norton say a six-year-old girl died after falling through an icy pond on Friday.

The Norton Police Department said she was reported missing Friday afternoon. Fire crews began searching near Barrowsville Pond and Wading River due to the proximity of the home to the water.
A rescue command post was staged at the bridge that's across the street from the six-year-old's home. Divers were called in and found the six-year-old girl in the water. According to police, she had non-verbal autism.

She was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital where she died.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim," said Fire Chief Shawn Simmons.
"Our hearts go out to the family," said Police Chief Brian M. Clark. "We offer our condolences for their loss."
