Coldest air of the season for most ahead
Jan 20, 2025
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Arctic cold air is starting to move through the Northeast Highlands with just enough moisture being squeezed out in front of the frontal boundary that light snow is falling along parts of the east slopes the Sangre de Cristo Mountains through the East Highlands to the East Plains of New Mexico. Bitterly cold air is present with a colder start in many southern areas and while it was not quite as cold as yesterday morning for most other areas, record cold afternoon temperatures for some to widespread record low morning temperatures tomorrow morning are expected with the northerly winds making it feel even more-dangerously cold.
Clouds in northern areas with the light snow showers in northeastern areas are passing through eastward while dragging southward with the cold front starting to approach, but elsewhere is starting off with the low temperatures being accompanied by dry air with mostly light winds, for now. Air temperatures have been as low as several degrees below zero in parts of the San Luis Valley through the Enchanted Circle to the Sandias, as well as parts of the West Mountain communities, but most areas are starting in the single digits, teens, and lower 20s.
Very cold air, being accompanied by the gustier winds with the snow activity drifting southward while moving eastward, will persist in northern to eastern areas with the cold front battling the daytime warming, allowing for temperatures to remain stagnant for most of the day for some, the coldest in years, while from Albuquerque to the southwest, it will warm up, but afternoon temperatures will be below normal with mostly sunny skies with east-canyon winds. From the morning school commute throughout the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the high single digits, 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s from east-northeast to west-southwest.
Life-threatening winds chills for many, especially around the northern-mountain community areas from the San Juan Mountains to the east, will occur tonight into tomorrow morning with air temperatures below zero degrees for many of those locations to even colder than -30 degrees, while areas to the south will drop into the single digits above zero degrees and the teens. Extremely cold wind chill values of below zero degrees will occur for most with it feeling as low as potentially -55 degrees in the far-northern mountains.
Modifying temperatures will slowly start to occur later tomorrow afternoon in the northern-mountain communities to eventually the southern communities by the middle of the week with some passing clouds but no precipitation and mostly lighter winds.
