SIOUX FALLS SD (KELO) -- President Joe Biden has commuted Leonard Peltier's life sentence for killing two federal agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation. In his last official day in office, Biden issued an official statement of commutation. "This commutation will enable Mr. Peltier to spend his remaining days in home confinement but will not pardon him for his underlying crimes," Biden wrote. Peltier, who is 80 years old, escaped prison once and has served a majority of his life behind bars. Biden cited many groups calls for Peltier's clemency, including the U.S. attorney that oversaw Peltier's prosecution and appeal and Peltier's ties to the Native American community. As an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota, Peltier was active in the American Indian Movement, which began in the 1960s as a local organization in Minneapolis that grappled with issues of police brutality and discrimination against Native Americans. Peltier was denied parole as recently as July and wasn’t eligible for parole again until 2026.
