Men of Impact hold summit in honor of Dr. MLK Day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis has become the mecca for honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Day with several events taking place.
Dr. Stacy Spencer, Chief Apostolic Officer of New Direction Christian Church, bared the freezing temperatures to send a message on Monday morning.
“Dr. King was going to do a poor people march, where he was going to make sure America made good on its promissory note that black folks would have economic equality and access to wealth and so that’s why we are here this morning to make sure we pick up that baton," Dr. Spencer said. "Dr. King wanted us to activate that dream and it was more than just a dream."
According to Dr. Spencer, it was the foundation and he doesn’t stand on it alone — more than a dozen other black men joined him at Beale Street Landing at Tom Lee Park to march with him.

“There’s a disconnect in our community right now with communicating. When we communicate we find we have more ideas that are aligned,” said Will Richardson, Oganizanier.
Shelby County Commissioner Charlie Caswell says he created the summit, ‘Men of Impact,’ to bring everyone together regardless of their political views to develop policies for change.
“As a policymaker myself, it is good to have these men tell us what it is that they want to see and us help make that happen,” Caswell said.
Caswell says more than 28 percent of men of color voted for President Donald Trump but with crime, poverty, and criminal justice reform being such a major issue among the black community they are not waiting to see if the President will help.

“Help is not going to come from the outside. It’s going to come from the inside, out. So, the sooner we can come together as men in Memphis and put together our economic plan. We can see the viability and change the narrative from a city of poverty to a city of prosperity,” Dr. Spencer said.
If you would like to join the conversation the next event for Men of Impact is February 12.
