INDIANAPOLIS -- As Central Indiana is expected to see extreme cold weather over the next few days, officials with AES Indiana said they are fully staffed and "prepared to meet the increased demand for electricity." According to a news release from AES Indiana, a cold weather advisory is in effect because of the temperatures, as well as wind chills falling between -10 and -20 degrees. AES Indiana provided the following cold weather energy efficiency tips for individuals being impacted by the extreme cold weather: Set the thermostat back at least eight degrees each day when they are at work and when they go to bed. AES Indiana states that 70 degrees is a good threshold when you are at home and lower when you're at work or sleeping. Don't set the thermostat higher if they're trying to heat their home quickly. AES Indiana said it will not heat the home any faster and it runs the system longer than necessary Don't let anything, including furniture, drapes and curtains, block heating airflow Bitter cold with dangerous wind chills remaining through Wednesday If a person's power goes out during the extreme cold weather, AES Indiana states that they should: Turn off all appliances but leave on one lamp to know when power is restored Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed Officials also said that if the indoor temperature falls below 55 degrees, individuals should open their faucets slightly so they constantly drip to prevent pipes from freezing.
