INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Plainfield warehouse supervisor was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after stealing approximately $2 million in Fitbit devices from bulk orders that came through the mail. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Dwight Oliver, 40, from Texas, pleaded guilty to mail fraud following the thefts spanning from June 2021 to September 2022. During that time, Oliver worked as a facility supervisor for a Plainfield-based warehouse from May 2021 to August 2022. Court documents did not specify which company operated the warehouse. While Oliver worked as a supervisor, almost $2 million worth of Fitbits went missing while in transit to Amazon fulfillment centers across the county. Amazon later discovered through an internal investigation the missing devices were “associated with bulk purchase orders that had transited at one time through the warehouse where Oliver worked.” Investigators determined that in June 2021, Oliver started stealing Fitbits from the warehouse. Oliver also disabled the GPS trackers in the warehouse sprinter vans to transport the devices undetected. He would then post the Fitbits on eBay, pretending to be a legitimate third-party seller. In total, Oliver earned at least $687,000 from selling the stolen Fitbits. Zach Myers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, says Oliver’s sentencing shows financial crimes can “result in serious consequences.” “Modern eCommerce depends modern logistics and supply chains, including many businesses in the Southern District of Indiana. Criminals who abuse their positions of trust to steal from customers and their employers cause harm to our economy and raise prices for everyone,” Myers said. Following his release from prison, Oliver will serve one year of supervised release and pay $1,435,954.62 in restitution. .
