Louisiana winter storm to bring snow, extreme cold weather Tuesday
Jan 20, 2025
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- A potent winter storm is expected to impact southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi on Tuesday.
A surface low will develop near the southeast Texas coast. Moisture in association with this system will stream northward into our area. The moisture mixing with the cold air will lead to a wintry mix of precipitation and snow showers.
A Cold Weather Advisory will be issued at 6 p.m. as dangerous wind chill values will be expected tonight and during the overnight hours. Wind chill values will be in the teens again.
A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from midnight Tuesday through midnight Wednesday.
An Extreme Cold Watch will be in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Wednesday due to dangerously cold wind chill values. Highs will be near 40 degrees on Wednesday. Some of the snow will melt, but then it will re-freeze overnight as lows drop into the 20s on Thursday morning. The same thing will happen on Thursday. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-40s so that will allow more of the snow to melt, but then it will re-freeze again overnight as lows fall into the 20s on Friday morning.

More rain will move through Monday night. Due to the very cold temperatures, this will be a mix of rain and freezing rain. Sleet is likely too. There will be a few snow flurries before midnight. Snow showers will increase overnight on Tuesday morning. Overnight lows will be in the 20s.

Tuesday weather 🌨️
During the pre-dawn hours, there will be a wintry mix. Sleet, freezing rain and snow will impact our area and contribute to worsening conditions on the roads.
Around mid-morning, the wintry mix should transition to all snow.
By mid-morning and through the afternoon, our entire viewing area should be covered in snow. There will be periods of light snow showers and heavier snow showers.
As the Gulf system moves away from the area, there will be less moisture present to support any precipitation. There will be a brief transition from pure snow back to a wintry mix during the early evening hours. All of the precipitation should be out of the area Tuesday night.
