Louisiana snow: How to measure snowfall correctly
Jan 20, 2025
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First News) -- A winter storm is set to hit Louisiana on Tuesday.
The Baton Rouge area could see 4 to 6 inches of snow. The entire area is under a Winter Storm Warning from midnight Tuesday through Wednesday.
If you want to measure how much snow falls in your area, here are some steps you must take.
It's best to measure snow on solid, flat surfaces. Place a piece of plywood down before the snow falls to get an accurate measurement.
Next, you'll need a ruler. If need be, borrow one from your child's backpack.
The National Weather Service has laid out six basic steps to measure the snow properly.
Locate a surface that is solid, level, and open. Avoid measuring snow and sleet depth under trees or directly next to buildings.
Slide the ruler directly downward into the sleet until it reaches the ground.
Read the value on the ruler to the nearest tenth of an inch, if possible.
Record this value on your piece of paper.
Repeat steps 2 through 4 in several locations around the immediate area.
Calculate the average snow and/or sleet depth for your area by adding all of the measurement values together, then dividing the resulting sum by the number of measurements taken.
