BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The man arrested for the 2011 hit-and-run crash that killed a Kern High School District police chief faced a judge Friday. Now, more than a decade later, the family of Steve Alvidrez can begin to heal. It was just before midnight on June 17, 2011, when a car smashed into the Harley that 52-year-old Steve Alvidrez and the love of his life were riding. Alvidrez was killed on Highway 99 south of Delano. His wife, Ramona, suffered major injuries. The driver sped off. Now, more than a decade later, authorities say they've cracked the high-profile cold case after 37-year-old David Lilly was arrested Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport. "Justice delayed is not justice denied," said Kern County Deputy District Attorney Gina Pearl. "I'm happy he can no longer hurt anyone else in the community," said Steve Alvidrez, Alvidrez' son. "His time is coming. So, he has to answer for that. So, for me, I'm very happy he's behind bars." The California Highway Patrol says Lilly was brought back to the U.S. from Mexico where he was living near Puerto Vallarta, but the DA's Office hasn't said how Lilly was tracked down. "I can't answer that, I'm sorry," said Pearl. The DA's Office also hasn't said who arrested him. "I can't comment on that. I'm sorry," Pearl added. And the DA's office did not comment on any other aspect of the investigation. "I can't answer additional questions," said Pearl. The prosecution said they're seeking the maximum penalty: life in prison. Heavy KCSO presence at Pioneer Cottages in East Bakersfield Investigators say Lilly had two prior DUI's before the crash that killed Alvidrez. Lilly was not charged for more than a year. When charges came down the line, Lilly disappeared. "We live with it every day, we think about our father, husband every single day of our life," said Steve, Alvidrez' son. "So, it's a very surreal thing for us and it's an everyday thing for us, but we know that we're trying to make our dad proud and be strong, and we're thankful this day is finally coming." Lilly is charged with second degree murder and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He's set to be in court Feb. 13 and was denied bail. In the meantime, Steve, named after his dad, is just happy to follow in his father's heroic steps protecting and serving others. "My dad's shoes are really big," said Steve Alvidrez. "I could not be as amazing as he is, but I can only aspire to be half as amazing as he is. So, he's my hero and I'm definitely proud to be his son."
