Columbus and central Ohio Weather Radar Columbia Gas noted a list of things to do and keep in mind when dealing with frozen temperatures, snow, and even ice. Before looking at tips inside the house, make sure outside that any vents are clear of snow or ice and keep your gas meter visible to avoid any carbon monoxide buildup. Among the things to do inside the house to avoid a possible gas leak include the following, per Columbia Gas: Use space heaters with caution. Place them on hard, level surfaces and keep anything flammable – bedding, curtains, rugs, etc. – at least three feet away. Ensure heating appliances and equipment are inspected and operating properly. Operate all pieces of equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions. Never use a stove or oven as a source of heat in your home; ovens are designed to heat food and should only be operated with the door closed. Don’t burn charcoal or run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space. Clean your chimney and check for blockage at least once a year before using your fireplace. If you have a potential gas leak, call 911. Weather Alerts AEP Ohio issued an extreme cold watch and said they will be monitoring the electrical grid in the event homes begin losing power. In the event you lose power, AEP Ohio recommends preparing an emergency kit that includes portable phone chargers, battery-powered radio or television, and more. If you are using a space heater, set it three feet away from anything flammable and never leave it running when no one is inside that room. For food safety, keep your fridge and freezer closed during a power outage to keep perishable foods as fresh as possible. Once perishable foods begin to smell rotten, discard them immediately. If you are on the go during extreme winter weather, prepare an emergency kit to avoid being stranded without necessary supplies.
