SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A snowstorm blanketed western Massachusetts overnight. Winter Storm Warning: What to expect in western Massachusetts In Springfield, side streets along with some main roads are still covered in snow. Some neighbors haven't even been touched by a plow yet Monday morning. There is still snow accumulating on the roads so it is important to be careful if you are commuting Monday morning. There is snow everywhere currently, which can make driving conditions difficult. AAA does have some winter weather driving tips for driving in the snow. Their biggest tip is only go out if necessary, especially until the snow stops and the roads have been cleared, they recommend you only go out if it is necessary. If you deem it necessary, drive slowly with caution, as the roads can be slippery as snow can cause less traction on the roads and therefore you may slide when turning or slide when braking. If you start to skid, do not brake hard. Take your foot off the accelerator, and turn your steering wheel in the direction you want to go. When you are accelerating and decelerating, also go slowly, they say it is easier for a car to gain traction when taken slow. Also, for stop lights and stop signs, start slowly applying pressure to your brakes for a longer distance to help try and prevent sliding. AAA also recommends you increase your following distance between you and the car in front of you, if you are on the highway, leave extra room but also follow those tire tracks in front of you on the roads. Another important thing to remember with driving in the snow is to clear off your car. Make sure you clear off the snow on your car and scrape any ice off windows.
