A break in the case: Monroe County Sheriff's Sergeant talks tracing Rochester fugitive to Uganda

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester man who became an international fugitive is now in the custody of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office after a multi-year investigation led authorities to Uganda.
Authorities said in 2019, David Johnson attempted to kill his wife by lighting her and their Augustine Street home on fire. Sunday, a Monroe County Sheriff's Office Sergeant shared with News 8 what recently led to a break in the case.
"It had kind of gone cold," Sgt. Trevor Ott admitted. "In 2020 we had him, we thought he was in Jamaica and then we just lost all idea of where he was."
Sgt. Trevor Ott said he was able to track the suspect to Uganda using social media.
Ott spent more than a year attempting to locate Johnson. He said investigators from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Marshals, kept up their due diligence. Then, last year, after interviewing friends, family, and partaking in some social media sleuthing, they got a break in the case.
"We ended up getting a name for a gentleman that we believed he could possibly be staying with, and we didn't know where he was at the time - we just had the name," Ott said.
From there, Ott said he did something actually quite basic.
"Just a simple Facebook search, just typed in the search bar the name, I look at his pictures, I look at his cover photo and there's three individuals and the third one standing right there. I'm like, 'that's David Johnson,' and that was kind of our 'ah hah!' moment," Ott said.
Investigators learned Johnson created an entirely new life for himself. He reportedly opened a restaurant, even got re-married there.
"The Deputy Marshal who was still assigned in this office - I think three different sheriff's deputies it was - passed on to them and they stuck to it and eventually a warrant was issued for him in Uganda - a provisional arrest warrant - and the Ugandan law enforcement was able to locate him and take him into custody back in November," said Charles Salina, U.S. Marshal for Western New York.

As for the victim, who survived, it's a step closer to closure after years of waiting.
"She was relieved. It's a five-year hunt. She was happy I didn't have to keep calling her, bugging her. She - It was a good phone call. She was happy. It was actually her birthday I called her on too so, double-good," Ott said.
David Johnson was extradited back to Rochester earlier this month. He's been charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, and attempted arson in the third degree. He is currently being held in jail without bail.
