SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Several people were injured after a crash involving multiple vehicles Sunday evening in the SoMa neighborhood, the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) said. San Francisco police responded around 6:08 p.m. for a collision at 6th Street between Bryant and Harrison. There were a total of eight victims, according to SFFD. One of them died, and two more were taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries. The fire department added that a dog also died at the scene. Seven vehicles were involved in the crash. The two victims with life-threatening injuries are currently at SF General Hospital. One of the seven vehicles in the crash was a Waymo, an autonomous taxi, video taken on the Citizen App shows. The autonomous vehicle company confirmed one of its cars was involved in the collision, saying the Waymo was rear-ended. According to a Waymo spokesperson, the autonomous vehicle was struck from behind by a speeding car that was going about 98 miles per hour. The Waymo, which was unoccupied, was stopped at a red light. An unoccupied Waymo vehicle was operating autonomously in San Francisco when it was struck from behind in a multiple-car collision caused by a vehicle traveling well above the speed limit. The trust and safety of our community remain our top priority, and we are coordinating with local safety officials. Before the crash, there were multiple hit-and-run collisions on northbound I-280. Investigators are working to determine if that is related to the Harrison Street crash. The Chevron on Harrison Street remains open. The closures are expected to remain overnight. California Highway Patrol is also at the scene investigating the crash.
