While the selection of top officials to oversee Upper Makefield Township was anything but combative, supervisors this year face a couple of tough issues. Overhaul of the iconic 120-year-old Washington Crossing Bridge is high on the list of tenacious matters, as is management of stormwater and flooding concerns in the municipality. Both items have raised public and governmental involvement and are expected to remain a top concern this year. The Delaware River Toll Bridge Commission over the past several months has examined the narrow, steel structure it owns looking for the best solutions to chronic safety problems with the bridge that handles 7,000 vehicles daily. Still unanswered is whether to widen the bridge, alternate one-way traffic, or rebuild. Commission meetings will continue. Upper Makefield Township officials also will be working to manage flooding along River Road and stormwater runoff in neighboring areas. The issue heated up following a July 2023 flash flood that killed seven people. The two matters are among many supervisors will handle this year. Unlike last year’s quarrelsome board reorganization session, this year’s mandatory restructuring saw no disputes. The session, in fact, ended with three Democrats appointed to board positions: Yvette Taylor, reappointed as board chair, Ben Weldon, as vice chair, and Braun Taylor, as treasurer. Republican Supervisors Tom Cino and Tim Thomas voted in favor of the appointments.
