Man shoots park ranger in chest on Belle Isle, police continue search

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Police are searching for a man who shot a park ranger in the chest on Belle Isle on Sunday -- people are urged to avoid the area until further notice.
According to police, they received a call at 1:42 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19 for the report of a person shot.
When officers arrived on scene they found an Urban Park Ranger who told police that he was interacting with a man in a wooded area of the park, and when he offered him services for shelter he produced a firearm and shot the ranger in the chest.
The ranger was wearing a bullet proof vest, according to police, and he only sustained minor injuries. The ranger met with a detective and is currently being checked out at a local hospital.
Richmond Police also provided a description of the person of interest -- a Black man believed to be in his late 30s, standing at 5 foot 11 inches with a short patchy beard and short unkempt hair. He was wearing a black winter coat and all the clothing he was wearing was dirty, according to police.
Since the investigation has begun, police have set up a command post and currently have SWAT operators searching the island for the man. They are also utilizing bloodhounds and other canines to search the island.
Police are asking people to avoid the area while the search continues. Anyone with information is urged to call 911.
