RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) -- After President Joe Biden granted clemency to the "Waverly Two," Governor Glenn Youngkin and Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares issued statements criticizing his decision.
On Sunday, the NAACP Virginia State Conference commended Biden for commuting the sentences of Ferrone Claiborne and Terrence Jerome Richardson.
Virginia NAACP President Rev. Cozy Bailey released the following statement:
"The clemency decision is a vital step toward correcting a grave injustice. The Waverly Two are not just a statistic; they are individuals whose lives were shattered by a flawed legal system. We commend President Biden for taking this courageous step, but we must also condemn Governor Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares for their politicization of this matter. Instead of focusing on justice and truth, they have chosen to manipulate facts for their political agenda.”
The NAACP said the action brings a measure of justice to those who have suffered for far too long.
Jarrett Adams, Richardson’s attorney, also made the following statement directly to WAVY 10 in response to Miyares and Youngkin:
“Governor Youngkin and Jason Miyares are unfortunately using the daughter of Officer Gibson as a political pawn to shield the public from the fact that there is zero evidence of guilt, and they are using the commonwealth’s resources and energy to obstruct justice by maintaining a bogus guilty plea, instead of finding out the truth of what really happened to Officer Gibson.”
