Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting at a gas station in Fort Lauderdale that left a man dead.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, officers attempted to pull an SUV over along the 100 block of Southwest 27th Avenue, just after 3 p.m. on Sunday.
“The vehicle did not stop. Officers disseminated the vehicle’s description via our police radio,” said FLPD Chief Bill Schultz.
A short time later, detectives said, the driver of the SUV pulled into the Chevron station on Davie Boulevard, near Southwest 31st Avenue.
Surveillance video captured the silver Mercedes-Benz SUV stopping next to a gas pump, followed by an unmarked police vehicle.
“The police parked on Pump 3, and the [silver] car was parked on Pump 1, right?” said an employee at the gas station.
Seconds later, the SUV is seen pulling away when a dark colored SUV appears to block its way from the front and the unmarked police vehicle moves behind the SUV.
“He goes back there, then he tries to run, and another police [officer] was following him, and they could block his way,” said the employee.
Officers jumped out with guns drawn moments later. The rest of the incident was obscured by the gas pump.
“Preliminary investigation reveals the driver exited the vehicle with what appeared to be a firearm,” said Schultz.
Investigators said one FLPD officer discharged his weapon, striking the subject.
Neighbors told 7News they heard what they thought was gunfire and saw police start to gather shortly after.
“And I hear ‘boom, boom, boom.’ I don’t know if it’s real. I think it’s not real, and I go back inside the house,” said area resident Marie Dasse.
7News cameras captured officers cordoning off the gas station and surrounding streets with crime scene tape.
“I see a lot of police out here, and I was just kind of trying to figure out what’s going on in the neighborhood,” said area resident Jay Gio.
Officers at the scene performed life-saving efforts on the subject before paramedics transported him to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.
No officers were hurt. Police did not specify whether or not they recovered a gun from the subject.
The Mercedes SUV was towed away from the gas station Sunday evening.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the Florida Department of Law enforcement investigates the shooting.
