For us, we'll remain quiet with the cold not budging for a few days. Wind Chills Sunday Evening Sunday Evening Cold Headlines The coldest periods for central Indiana will be the mornings through Wednesday. Out of the three mornings, Monday looks to have the greatest potential of seeing -20° (or lower) wind chill values in spots. The coldest wind chills will come in spots away from downtown Indianapolis and in spots where a deeper snowpack exists. Since Monday is a national holiday, many schools and businesses will be closed. However, that's not the case everywhere. Closings and delays have already been reported. You can check out that list here. When more schools/businesses open Tuesday, I anticipate more closings to be announced. This cold comes at a time where the coldest temperatures of the season usually occur. The period of January 16-21 in the history books all have record low temperatures of -20° or lower. It's also been 31 years since the 1994 cold outbreak occurred in the Hoosier State. On that day, Indianapolis set its all-time coldest temperature of -27°. Indianapolis Star Cover from the January 19, 1994 issue The good news is that this dangerous cold will only be around for two days. Starting Wednesday, a flattening jet stream will give us a boost in temperatures following this cold blast. While Wednesday will start cold, highs that day will get back into the 20s. Then by Thursday and Friday, highs will be close to freezing. The warmest day this week looks to be Saturday with a good chance of highs near 40° and some rain in there. After this week, the remainder of January does look to have below-normal temperatures. They won't be as cold as the next three days though. To open February, it looks to be near normal if not just above normal. The average high for February 1st is 37°.
