PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — A driver crashed into the truck scales on Interstate 94 in Porter County on Saturday.
According to a press release, a state trooper first responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-94's eastbound scale, which is located near the exit for Chesterton. Upon arrival at the scene, the trooper learned the driver of a black 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe had blown through the entrance to the scale at a high rate of speed.
The Tahoe's driver struck a metal entrance gate and hit several light poles and street signs before coming to a stop. The vehicle was crushed up against a scale house guard rail at the end of the crash.
ISP reported that debris from the crash shattered the scale house's windows.
As the trooper continued the crash investigation, they learned the Tahoe's driver had consumed alcoholic beverages before the crash. The trooper also learned the motorist was attempting to drive home to Illinois on I-94 westbound before the crash. Instead, the driver had mistakenly been driving eastbound on I-94.
The driver — who was later identified as 28-year-old Monserrath Lopez of Chicago — was charged with operating while intoxicated after the crash. She was booked at the Porter County Jail.
Police estimate Lopez caused thousands of dollars-worth of damage to light polies, signs and the scale house.
As of this article's publication, no additional information on the crash had been made available.
