SHERIDAN, Ind. — A bullet from a gun being test-fired by a Sheridan reserve police officer struck a home on Sunday. According to a press release, an SPD officer was called to the Maple Run subdivision around 12:30 p.m. on a report of shots fired. After the officer arrived at the scene and ensured nobody was injured, he took the initial case information. Once he received the information, the officer contacted one of his supervisors. Eventually, the officer determined he was involved in the shooting he had been called to the investigate. Before he was sent to the shooting scene, the officer and another unidentified individual had been test-firing two non-department-issued guns on a private range located 3/4 of a mile from the scene. SPD confirmed that the range was complete with backstop railroad ties and a dirt backfill. During their investigation, police ultimately determined one of the bullets used during the test-firing session ricocheted from the range and struck a house in the Maple Run subdivision. SPD has asked the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office to handle the investigation of the incident because the shooting involved a Sheridan reserve officer. As of this article's publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
