Funeral services scheduled for fallen Honolulu firefighter

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A Honolulu firefighter who tragically lost his life in the line of duty will be laid to rest.

Twenty-five-year-old Jeff Fiala was killed while fighting an apartment fire on Young Street in the McCully area on Jan. 6. Five other firefighters and one occupant were hospitalized.
The incident was later classified as accidental due to unattended cooking, according to reports from HFD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, Firearms and Explosives National Response Team.

A private funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 at HFD Headquarters. Community members who wish to pay their respects can observe the procession along the route or through the Olelo Community Media livestream.
HFD said they will release the procession details at a later time.
The community is welcome to drop off flowers and lei at HFD Headquarters on Friday, Jan. 24 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Fiala was a 2017 graduate of Radford High School and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2021.
He later decided to join the Honolulu Fire Department in 2022 where he was accepted into HFD's 115th Recruit Class in July 2023.
Fiala was stationed in Waiau and ended the remainder of his service in Kakaako.
Loved ones said he was known for his enthusiasm, positive attitude, sense of humor, his love for the ocean and adventure and his devotion to his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, parents, two brothers and two cats.
