MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- Officials in Montgomery County announced that some county services and activities have been altered on Sunday due to the anticipated snowfall. According to a release from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), a Winter Storm Warning for 4 to 6 inches is in effect until 7 p.m. for the northern part of the county. In the southern part of the county, 2 to 4 inches are expected. As a result, officials postponed the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, which was scheduled for Sunday at the Music Center at Strathmore, until Monday at 4 p.m. Aside from the performance, the Strathmore campus will be closed on Monday, according to the event's website. Montgomery County Public Schools has also canceled all Sunday school-sponsored activities and the community use of buildings due to the winter weather. Regarding county recreation centers, all scheduled programs, classes and activities have also been canceled, with recreation, senior and aquatic centers open for "drop-in activities only." Salting the smart way: How to use winter salt in the DMV Officials said that crews are monitoring roadway conditions as cold temperatures, which are expected to continue throughout the week, will cause any snow to freeze overnight. Due to the icy conditions, MCDOT said travelers using the Ride On bus service should expect delays and detours and that the Flash Route will utilize the 40-foot buses for service instead of the Flash-branded buses. "Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. MCDOT urges residents to stay off roadways once snowfall begins. Those who must travel should reduce speed, carry a flashlight, food and water in their vehicle, and dress warmly in case of an emergency," MCDOT noted. MCDOT also emphasized that residents may see snowplows driving through their neighborhoods with "plows raised" due to "snowpack" caused by frigid temperatures. The plows, which cannot remove solid ice when temperatures are at their lowest, will be able to clear the snow efficiently once it accumulates to about 3 to 4 inches. By law, residents must clear sidewalks along their properties within 24 hours of the end of a snowstorm. Residents can click here for snow-related updates, including plow progress. Residents can also click here to sign up for alerts from the county's emergency alert system.
