ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As cold temperatures move into the metro, there's a concern that pipes will freeze and burst, leading to costly repairs. News 13 spoke with plumbing experts on what residents can do to prepare. "We can always expect to be extremely busy this time of year," said Wesley Holloway, Service Department Manager for TLC Plumbing Heating Cooling Electrical. According to TLC, they receive hundreds of service calls during this time of year, averaging about 400 to 600 calls each day. TLC says most of those calls are to repair burst pipes or broken furnaces. "Our furnaces are going to be ramping up and running more than normal so having a clean filter really helps the lifespan of that unit," Holloway said. Santa Fe, Albuquerque prepare for overnight sheltering ahead of cold weather To prevent pipe damage, experts urge residents to allow pipes to drip, keeping them from freezing. They also suggest replacing your furnace filter, which helps it run better and increases its lifespan. "If you just pull it out, you can check to see how clean or how dirty," Holloway explained. "This one is getting a little dirty, probably would recommend replacing this." Lastly, they say putting a hose bib will also help keep your pipes from getting too cold. The company says they can get a burst pipe fixed within a couple of hours of receiving a service call, but could take longer depending on road conditions and traffic calls. "That's one way you can really help ensure that doesn't happen on your home is to put those little covers on," Holloway added.
